Prison officials think of inmates with contempt – Attorney-at-Law Senaka Perera

Senaka Perera, Attorney-at-Law, Chairman of the Committee to Protect the Rights of Prisoners, says that despite the slogan ‘Prisoners are human beings’, law enforcement officials themselves have a low opinion of prisoners / suspects. A suspect arrested by the Matugama Police has died suddenly. The deceased has been identified as Vidanage, Bellanagama Dhanuka Saliya, (40) who lived in No. 49, Yatadola. The suspect was arrested by the Matugama Police yesterday (22) in connection with a kassippu charge and fell ill. He was rushed to the Wettewa Government Hospital in Matugama due to mucus coming out of his mouth, but he had already died, hospital sources said. SC orders policemen to pay for youth’s death after assault

The Supreme Court has ordered six police personnel at the Kandaketiya Police Station to pay compensation of Rs.300,000 to a mother of a 17-year-old deceased son who died after being assaulted by police personnel in 2014.
